We practiced our sight words on the ipads.

We made lists and cards at Work on Writing.

Thank you, mom and dad for helping us with our Pals homework!  What great practice!

We learned about Real Reading with a reading salad!  We not only need to read the text, but we need to THINK about what we are reading.

Writer's Workshop is well under way!

GoNoodle is a great way to get our wiggles out!  Especially on those rainy days.

Our First Week!

We began our week by working in our math journals.  Here we compared our seahorses to the one that is colored.  We had to decide if each one was the same size or different.

Below is the poem we learned about using our quiet feet and lips when we walk down the hallway to our other classes.

Another day, we worked in our math journals again by asking our friends what their favorite animal is.

Next, they graphed their data.

Finally, they compared their graphs with each other.

We learned a lot about our Daily 5 routines.  We practiced Reading to Ourselves and...

with someone.

This past week we worked a lot with tens frames.  We practiced by using our names!

This is how our milk experiment started out.  Did your child tell you what happened next?

One of our Word Work activities was to practice sight words on our ipads.

During Working on Writing, we worked on making lists.

We sure accomplished a lot during our first week!  I can't wait to see all that we can do during Week 2!

**PICTURE DAY IS TOMORROW!!**

Dismissal Routines:  If your child is changing his/her dismissal routine even for one day, the office must have a written note from you stating the change or you must call the school office.  If a child tells me that they are doing something different than their normal routine without a note or phone call, I must follow their usual dismissal routine.  PLEASE help us with this matter.  We are concerned for your child’s safety as much as you are.  Thanks!

Scholastic Book Orders:  Attached you will find our first book order of the school year.  If you would like to place an order you can fill out the form and return it with the payment in a labeled envelope.  You may also place order online by going to:  https://clubs2.scholastic.com/  Click on Parents and enter the following classroom code:  H7FRN.  Please make checks payable to:  Scholastic.  All orders will be due by Tuesday, September 16th.

Pals Lessons:  Today your child is coming home with our first Pals lesson.  We will do 2-3 of these per week.  We did this in class as a whole group and then with a partner.  It is excellent practice for your child to review at home.  For each lesson that comes home, please review it with them, sign and return it in their folder the next day.  For each one returned, they will get a Gold Tag.
To review with your child, please point to each letter and have them name the sound of each letter in the first section.  In the second section, have your child sound out and say the words.  On the back are sight words.  Please have your child read these words to you.
When you come to a smiley face, give your child a compliment on how they are doing.  If they make a mistake, name the correct sound or word and have them repeat it.
After I a have seen the signed Pals lesson, I will send it home a final time.  I highly recommend that you keep these lessons in a folder or binder at home for future practice.  Thank you for your support!
Sight Words:  This week we will be learning to read the following words: am, at, be, if, so, no.  For now, we will focus on the two letter sight words.  Soon, each child will have a word ring that will hold the words we have covered in class.  This will also be coming home for practice.  I will let you know when we begin this process.

Open Court: This is our phonics program.  We will be learning how to blend, work with diagraphs, sounds chunks and vowel teams.  I will keep you informed of the skills that will be taught for each week in our newsletters.  This week we will focus on reviewing the sounds of:  m, a, t, h and p.

Math:  We will be working on the following skills:  placing objects on a graph, graphing a picture on a pictograph, identifying circles and squares, ordering sets from smallest to largest, identify most and fewest, order numbers from least to greatest and number writing.
Our daily math will include a group lesson, daily worksheet and centers.  During centers, students will work with the teacher in small groups, work in their math journal, play games and work with an online math program called Moby Max.

Comprehension Connections:  This week we will work with our first Text Talk story, Ruby the Copycat.  Attached is a sheet regarding this story.  We will focus on the vocabulary words that are listed.
We will also be learning about different strategies that can help us better comprehend what we read and what is read to us.

Gym:  Just a reminder that we will have gym class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Please be sure that your child is prepared each day with proper shoes.  Thank you!

Be sure to periodically check our class webpage.  The address can be found on the front of this newsletter.  The link also can be found on our school webpage.
